Behind the Plate Co. was born from life at the ballfield. ⚾

What started as an idea to create apparel that umpires would actually be proud to wear has grown into something incredibly special to us.

I’m the owner and designer behind Behind the Plate Co., but my connection to the umpire world started long before the first shirt was ever created. My partner, Rob, has spent years behind the plate and currently serves as President of the Harford County Umpires Association. Through him, the umpire community became part of my life too.

I’ve seen the early mornings, late nights, doubleheaders, tournament weekends, scorching summer games, and the dedication it takes to keep showing up and doing a job where half the ballpark may disagree with you before you’ve even made your second call. 😂

More importantly, I’ve gotten to know the people behind the masks.

They’re our friends. They’re veterans, husbands, fathers, grandfathers, partners, and people who genuinely love the game. And somewhere along the way, I realized there wasn't nearly enough apparel that felt like it was made for them.

So I decided to change that.

More Than Umpire Shirts

At Behind the Plate Co., we create apparel with personality.

Some designs celebrate the pride and tradition of umpiring. Some are meant to make you laugh. Others honor our Military Veteran Umpires, represent the associations we are proud to work with, or give the wives, girlfriends, and better halves holding everything together at home something of their own.

And then there’s our holiday crew... because even a profession as serious as umpiring deserves a little fun every now and then. 🎃🎄⚾

Every design starts with the same question:

Would the people we know and love in this community actually want to wear this?

If the answer isn't yes, it doesn't belong here.

Growing One Call at a Time

Since opening Behind the Plate Co. in 2026, we've watched something that started as a small idea begin to grow.

Every order still means something to us. Every time we see one of our shirts at a ballfield, hear that someone loved their order, or get the opportunity to design something special for an umpire association, it reminds us why we started.

We're still growing, still designing, and definitely still coming up with new ways to make umpires laugh.

But one thing won't change:

Behind the Plate Co. is about the people behind the game.

The umpires who make the calls.
The families who support them.
The friends made along the way.
And the love of baseball that brings all of us together.
